University of Manchester Publications Policy

Answer

Open Access requirements for University of Manchester researchers

In response to mandatory requirements from major research funding bodies that peer-reviewed versions of journal articles and conference proceedings are made freely available on publication, the University of Manchester established an institutional publications policy

The policy states that all research staff and students are required to deposit the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) of journal articles and conference proceedings to the University’s institutional repository upon acceptance. This is essential to ensure compliance with requirements for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and funder Open Access policies. Immediately upon publication, the University will then make the deposited manuscript publicly available under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence.

Authors may also comply with the publications policy by publishing their work Open Access with a CC BY licence, or by depositing their AAM to an appropriate subject repository, such as arXiv. Please see the following article for more information on sharing papers via subject repositories:

While the University's publications policy only applies to journal articles and peer-reviewed conference proceedings with an ISSN, the University also strongly encourages researchers to make any works which fall outside the policy as openly available as possible.
