How do I screen for companies and banks in S&P Capital IQ Pro?

S&P Capital IQ Pro (formerly S&P Global Market Intelligence) provides over 10 years of data on global financial markets and companies in the banking and finance sector. As of August 2023, it also contains information on companies and markets in all sectors, as previously accessed in the legacy Capital IQ platform. You may need to choose from several sources of data within Capital IQ Pro.

You must register for an S&P Global account which you can use for both Capital IQ and Capital IQ Pro. In Capital IQ Pro, there is a a 'Screener' app which can be used to provide a list or screen of companies based on your chosen criteria. After that, choose columns of data, then export the results to Excel.

Note: There are other features on news, industry analysis and economic, social and governance (ESG) data.

Launch the Screener app

When you have logged into Capital IQ Pro, on the black main menu bar, click on 'Apps' then 'Screener'. The first time you use it, you may be offered to watch a short tutorial.

Choose your search criteria

Build up your search by adding criteria. Either browse from the list on the left or click in the 'Add Search Criteria' box and type.

When you are ready to add a criteria, click the 'ADD' button. Look at the number of companies matched update.

When you are ready to move on, click the 'RUN SCREEN' button.

Choose your display columns

Under the 'SCREENING RESULTS' heading, click the 'DISPLAY COLUMNS' button. Here, you can browse or search for any data item. Consider the various sources mentioned earlier, you may find data is available from some, all or none of these for each company in the screen.

In the parameters section in the middle, you can choose a range of years or quarters for each data item, either relative or absolute dates. Click the '>' button to add your selection to the column on the right showing all the selected data items and dates.

When you are ready, click the 'APPLY' button to update the results. You have now created a custom screener report (set of columns).

Export the data to Excel

A preview of your custom screener report appears at the bottom of the screen.

At the top-right of the table, change the export option from 'Results As Table Function' to 'Results As Values'. This will ensure that all the data you export is fixed and not dependent on Excel functions or the Market Intelligence Excel add-in.

Click the 'EXPORT' button, choose a filename and save the file to your computer.
