Where can I find the geographic or product segmentation of a company's business?

This data is self-reported, but might be available in these resources for public companies.

In LSEG Refinitiv Workspace, locate the company by name or ticker symbol. In the horizontal company menu, hover over 'Financials' and click 'Segments'. Note that the choice of segments will vary between companies and years.

Also use 'Peers & Valuation > Value Chains' to view a geographic breakdown of customers and suppliers.

In Bloomberg, search for the company then type ‘FA PROD’ and press Enter to view the ‘Product Segments’ function. Type ‘FA GEO’ anpress Enter to view the ‘Geographic Segments’ function.

In Capital IQ, when viewing a company profile, from the ‘Financials/Valuation’ menu select ‘Segments’.

In Compustat via WRDS, go to WRDS and choose ‘Compustat-Capital IQ’. Select ‘North America – Daily’ then select ‘Segments (Non-Historical)’.

In Datastream, you can search the Worldscope segment analysis data, up to ten segments per company (geographic segment 1 is domestic, the rest are foreign).

  • Search for time series datatypes such as 'WC19601 Geographic Segment 1 - Sales' and 'WC19602 Geographic Segment 1 - Operating Income'.
  • Add this with unsegmented time series datatypes such as 'WC01001 - Net Sales Or Revenues' for global sales.
  • You can combine these time series datatypes in a Datastream expression such as "((X(WC01001)-X(WC19601))/X(WC01001))*100" (without the quotes) to get the ratio of domestic to global sales as a percentage. That is, ((global - domestic) / global) × 100
  • Search for static datatypes such as 'WC19600 Geographic Segment 1 - Description' to confirm the definition of each segment. (The description fields are mistakenly described as time series in the documentation.)
