Where can I find the institutional holdings of various stocks?

For ownership data of companies in the UK and Republic of Ireland, use Fame. For companies in other countries, use Orbis. In the individual company report, click on ‘Corporate ownership’ from the left menu and select ‘Current shareholders’.

For current and historic holdings, go to LSEG Refinitiv WorkspaceFor current and historic holdings, search for the company you want, click on ‘Ownership’ in the horizontal menu and select your report.

You may prefer to work in Workspace Excel for bulk access. See this video from Refinitiv about retrieving ownership data in Workspace Excel. We have copied the formulas used in the video to an Excel workbook.

In Bloomberg, try Bloomberg functions ‘OWN’ or ‘PHDC’ and select institutional holders. (Type these initials into the search box and press Enter.)

Accessing Refinitiv Institutional Holdings (13F) via WRDS:

Using Refinitiv Institutional Holdings (13F) via WRDS:

  • You can search for institutional holdings through Institutional Holdings (13F) in WRDS.
  • Please note: Refinitiv/Thomson Reuters institutional data is based on the actions of money managers of institutions holding stock. It does not focus on the companies issuing the stock. CUSIPs for the companies issuing the stocks must be looked up beforehand in the CRSP database on WRDS and then used in the Thomson Reuters database. CUSIPs are not available through the ‘Code Lookup’ feature.

To search for CUSIP codes to use with 13F:

  • Use CRSP via WRDS to look up CUSIP codes for issuing companies.
  • In WRDS, go to ‘Thomson/Refinitiv > Institutional (13f) Holdings - S34 > s34 Master File’.
  1. In ‘Step 1’: For the date range, set the beginning and ending month and year.
  2. In ‘Step 2’: Set the code format to ‘CUSIP’. Copy and paste the CUSIPs you have already looked up into the ‘Company Codes’ box under ‘Manually enter insider codes’. Enter multiple codes by leaving a single space between them. (Alternatively, create a .txt file containing the codes using Notepad and upload the file.)  Leave all the other boxes in this step unchanged.
  3. In ‘Step 3’: Select the following output variables: ‘Manager Description Information > Manager Name’, ‘Holdings Information > Company Name’ and ‘Shares Held’. Leave all the other boxes in this step unchanged.
