Open Access funds: Cancer Research UK (CRUK)

Answer

The Office for Open Research manages Open Access (OA) funds from Cancer Research UK (CRUK), in the form of an Open Access block grant. This grant is intended to support CRUK-funded authors with the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs), often required to publish papers Gold Open Access.

The CRUK Open Access block grant can be used to cover APCs for publications which meet the following criteria:

  • Original, primary research publications

  • Supported in whole, or in part, by CRUK

CRUK’s Open Access policy does not apply to book chapters, monographs, editorials, reviews or conference proceedings.

You need to ensure that you comply with CRUK’s OA policy to be eligible for funding:

  • You must publish your paper under a CC BY license (unless CRUK has allowed a CC BY-ND exception)

  • You must acknowledge your CRUK research funding in the funding acknowledgement section of your paper, using your grant reference number

  • An electronic copy of the final paper must be made freely available in Europe PubMed Central at the time of final publication

Requesting Open Access funding

To request funding, please see our How and when do I apply for Open Access funding? article.

If you are a researcher based at a CRUK Institute, your APC should be charged to your Institute’s core award, and not requested via the Office for Open Research.

Please make sure you are aware of all your funder’s requirements by visiting their OA policy webpage.
