Open Access funds: UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

Answer

The Office for Open Research manages Open Access (OA) funds from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in the form of an Open Access block grant. This grant is intended to support UKRI-funded authors with the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs), often required to publish papers Gold Open Access.

The UKRI Open Access block grant can be used for publications which meet the following criteria:

  • Original, primary research publications

  • Supported in whole, or in part, by UKRI funding (papers acknowledging funding from AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC, STFC or Innovate UK)

  • Where either the funding was awarded to The University of Manchester AND/OR the corresponding author is based at The University of Manchester

You will need to ensure you comply with UKRI’s OA policy to be eligible for funding:

  • You must acknowledge your UKRI research funding in the funding acknowledgement section of your paper, using your grant reference number

  • MRC or BBSRC-funded authors must ensure that an electronic copy of the final paper be made freely available in Europe PubMed Central as soon as possible and no later than six months after publication.
