What is Green Open Access?

Answer

Green Open Access (OA) is a means of sharing research outputs, in which:

  • The output is made OA without payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC)

  • The work is made freely available via an institutional (such as Pure at Manchester) or discipline-specific repository (e.g. arXiv).

  • The version of work available is typically the version post-peer review, but which has not yet undergone final formatting such as pagination, DOI assignment, or publisher branding. This version of an output is often referred to as the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM)

  • The version deposited may be subject to a publisher's embargo. However, all University of Manchester-authored papers accepted from March 1st 2023 can be made OA immediately upon publication via the University’s Rights Retention policy

Both Green and Gold OA are valid routes to compliance with the REF and University Open Access requirements.

How can I make my research outputs Green Open Access?

The Office for Open Research provides a mediated deposit service, supporting University of Manchester researchers to openly share their research outputs in an easy, efficient way. When you have a journal article or peer-reviewed conference proceeding accepted for publication, use the Open Access Gateway to send us a copy of your AAM. We will:

  • verify the manuscript version

  • check applicable journal and funder policies

  • arrange Green OA upon publication of your article

I’m not sure which version of my paper to deposit

We know that papers may go through several iterations and that it might be difficult to determine which version constitutes the AAM. If you’re unsure, please contact us
