Where can I find information on economic, social and governance (ESG) ratings of companies?

We can group environmental, social and governance (ESG) resources into two kinds:

  • ESG scores (quantitative)
  • ESG reports and literature (qualitative)

The University of Manchester subscribes to several specialist financial databases which provide access to historic ESG scores and reports. Many of our literature sources you may already be familiar with contain reports on ESG matters relating to specific companies or industries. There are several free or open data sources to consider.

Specialist financial databases with ESG data

  • MSCI ESG KLD via WRDS provides ratings data for North American companies.

    • KLD was discontinued on 1 January 2019. Unfortunately, we do not know if and when the successor product MSCI ESG Risk Rating will become available.

  • LSEG/Refinitiv ESG (formerly ASSET4) via Datastream or via Workspace covers more than 10,000 companies worldwide.
  • Beyond Ratings ESG via Datastream has over 75,000 economics series that cover ESG, climate and risk at sovereign level, based on FTSE Russell index families.
    • Read more about Beyond Ratings.
    • In Datastream Navigator, explore series under Economics » Macroeconomic ESG Indicators » Beyond Ratings.

  • Bloomberg provides a Bloomberg ESG Score for companies. It has corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports.
  • S&P Capital IQ Pro (formerly S&P Global Market Intelligence) provides ESG information for banks and financial services firms only.
