How do I ensure that my Researcher profiles are up-to-date?

Answer

Managing your researcher profiles ensures that your publications, institutional affiliations, and metrics are accurate and visible in key academic systems. Here’s an overview of the main tools you’ll encounter at the University of Manchester—and how they connect:

Pure: The University of Manchester’s Current Research Information System (CRIS)

Pure is the University’s business-critical CRIS used for internal reporting, research visibility, and REF submissions. It should form your primary research profile at Manchester and include links to any external profiles (such as ORCID, Scopus, and Web of Science).

Pure is managed by the University’s Research and Business Engagement (RBE) team

How to manage your Pure profile:

ORCID: Open Researcher and Contributor ID

ORCID provides a free, unique researcher identifier, widely used by publishers, funders, and institutions. It helps distinguish your work from others with similar names, and acts as a central hub for connecting your research activities.

How to set up and manage your ORCID:

Scopus: Scopus ID & Scopus Author Profiles

Scopus (developed by Elsevier) is a major abstract and citation database. It automatically generates a Scopus Author Profile when you publish within a journal which is indexed by Scopus. You may need to review, merge (if necessary), and verify your Scopus Author Profile to ensure accuracy.

How to manage your Scopus Author Profile:

Web of Science: Researcher Profiles & ResearcherID

Web of Science (developed by Clarivate) also creates Researcher Profiles when you publish in its indexed journals. Researchers must claim and validate their profiles, ensuring correct publications and affiliations—This is especially important to ensure accurate inclusion in rankings exercises such as Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers

How to manage your Web of Science Researcher Profile:

Why we recommend linking all systems (Pure, ORCID, Scopus, and Web of Science)

To keep everything working together smoothly and avoid duplication, we strongly recommend connecting all your profiles:

  1. Connect your ORCID to Pure
This ensures your publications and profile data are synced with the University’s systems.

  2. Connect your ORCID directly to Scopus and Web of Science
This allows those external databases to automatically update your ORCID record, reducing manual updates. Linking ORCID with Scopus & Web of Science

  3. Record your Scopus Author ID and Web of Science ResearcherID in Pure
This helps Pure to correctly match and import your publications for internal reporting.

Together, this creates a fully connected “triangle”:

  • ✅ Pure syncs with ORCID

  • ✅ Scopus and Web of Science sync with ORCID

  • ✅ Pure uses Scopus and WoS IDs to retrieve publications—but does not directly sync publication data with them.

Linking all these systems ensures there will be no gaps between your profiles, reducing the risk of missing publications, mismatches, or the need for manual data entry in the future.
