Sharing your research

Answer

The importance of sharing your research

Sharing research as openly as possible is key to driving innovation and maximising its potential societal impact. The University of Manchester is committed to cultivating an open and responsible research environment, as affirmed in the University’s Our Future strategy. The University’s Position Statement on Open Research centres principles of transparency, collaboration, and the public availability of research data and outputs, which translates into an expectation that ‘research outputs will be as open as early as possible.’

In addition to institutional expectations, many research funders require funded outputs like journal articles and monographs to be shared Open Access, to increase equity of access to research and drive real-world impact of science and scholarship. Open sharing of research also offers benefits to you as a researcher. Doing so can enhance the quality and reach of your work. By opening up your methodologies, datasets, and preliminary findings, you're not just inviting feedback, you're inviting collaboration. Open sharing throughout the process is a means of refining your work and broadening your perspective.

Sharing your research – interactive guide

The Office for Open Research has created an interactive guide to sharing your research outputs throughout the research process. The guide provides detailed information on the different output types that you may wish to share at each point in the research lifecycle; important considerations before sharing; and systems you can use to facilitate open sharing. You can work through the guide from beginning to end, or jump to a section that you’re interested in using the left-hand menu.

We’re committed to exploring, piloting and enabling access to systems which can further support open sharing of research. If you use a system for open sharing of research that isn’t yet included in this guide, let us know so we can explore this. [Contact us]
