Getting certified with Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC)

The Bloomberg Market Concepts course helps you to get ahead in finance, accounting and economics.

Bloomberg Market Concepts is an online course which covers over 70 Bloomberg related functions. As a University of Manchester student, you can complete the course and get certification for free. The modules within the course include:

  1. Economic Indicators (required) ~ 1 hour
  2. Currencies (required) ~ 1 hour
  3. Fixed Income (required) ~ 3 hours
  4. Equities (required) ~ 3 hours
  5. Getting Started On The Terminal ~ 2 hours
  6. Portfolio Management ~ 2 hours
  7. Stock Options ~ 2 hours
  8. Commodities ~ 2 hours

As part of each module, you will watch short video clips before completing a number of multiple-choice questions. Make sure to bring headphones with a 3.5mm plug, connected to the headphone socket on the back of the coloured keyboard.

On average, it takes 10 hours to work through the required modules, which you can space out over a number of sessions. However, you cannot resubmit any answers. You will have 12 months or until you graduate (whichever is sooner) to complete all the modules.

How do I access the BMC or ESG course?

The ‘Bloomberg Market Concepts’ course needs to be taken on a Bloomberg terminal. Please visit the Eddie Davies Finance Zone webpage to see where these terminals are located.

  1. Log into the Bloomberg terminal, using your own terminal login (create one if needed). Do not use the shared terminal login.
  2. Search for the 'BCER' function.
  3. Use the menu on the left to read an overview and modules for each of the courses: Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals (BFF), Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) and Environmental Social Governance (ESG).
  4. Use the menu on the left to log in or create a Bloomberg for Education account. (This is in addition to your terminal login.)
  5. Use the menu on the left to 'Launch Course'. The Bloomberg for Education website will load in your default browser. (You have to access this site via the terminal to make sure that your University credentials are picked up, otherwise you will be charged $149 for BMC.)
  6. Once on the Bloomberg for Education website, click 'Certificates' in the menu, then 'Bloomberg Market Concepts'.
  7. You can now complete the modules in any order you wish.

You will be added to a directory of all certified people upon completion so use a professional email address if you want to remain reachable after you graduate. You do not need a ‘Class Code’ unless your lecturer gave you one. You can also view the 'Continuous Learning' pages with webinars and videos produced by Bloomberg.
