Who are the University of Manchester Library’s Student Team and how can I join them?


Thank you for expressing an interest in working for the Library.

The Student Team are a group of around 20 students who undertake paid work alongside Library staff, working on a casual hours contract (up to 8 hours a week during term-time). The main remit of the Student Team is to support student learning and the student experience within the Library.

You will work on-campus, based primarily from the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons (but will also have the opportunity to work in other areas of campus/the John Rylands Research Institute and Library as required).

As a member of the Library Student Team, you will support the University of Manchester Library in delivering a variety of services, campaigns and events. Whilst prioritising supporting and assisting workshops and drop-ins. A place on the Student Team will help you to develop your skills in communication, problem solving, customer service, research and teaching, with opportunities to develop other skills such as filming, video editing, content creation and much more.

What are the requirements?

  • You must be a current undergraduate or postgraduate student/researcher.
  • You will be expected to maintain a consistent level of commitment to the role throughout the year (averaging approximately 8 hours a week), with flexibility during exam time and holidays. Core hours are between 09:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday.
  • You will receive training and support from staff members throughout your time in this role to help you develop and improve your skills. The wearing of the supplied Library branded clothing is a requirement of this role.
  • You should have good interpersonal skills and enjoy working collaboratively with others to support student learning and the wider Library.
  • You should be able to work independently and proactively participate as a member of the Student Team, including involvement in projects, team meetings and communications.
