Where can I get FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) data?
In Datastream, when choosing the ‘Data Category’, select ‘Economics’. Type ‘foreign direct investment’ or ‘FDI’ and the country name in the search box.
Euromonitor Passport provides annual FDI data dating back to 1977 (inflows, outflows, inward/outward stocks and FDI Intensity) for over 200 countries (data will vary from country to country). Hover over ‘Economies’ on the teal navigation bar, then click ‘Economy, finance, & trade’. Find the grey box on the left side of the next page, and click ‘foreign direct investment (FDI)’ within it. This will take you to an expandable menu where you can check boxes for a number of FDI-related data points. Choose those that interest you and click the orange ‘Next’ button. On the next page, choose the continents or countries that interest you, then hit the orange ‘run search’ button. Finally, on the next page, click the ‘View all statistics’ button.
Consider the following websites:
- In the IMF eLibrary, click on ‘IMF Data > Data Topics’, select ‘Coordinated Direct Investment Survey’ (CDIS) under ‘External Sector’. Click on ‘All Tables’, choose desired country and year. Select data tables.
- In the OECD iLibrary, search for 'International Direct Investment'. Click on the link to ‘OECD International Direct Investment Statistics’ (database) to view annual data by country or industry.
For world investment reports, go to UNCATD, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Type ‘world investment report’ in search box.
