How do I get a copy of EndNote Desktop as a University member?

As part of the new University license agreement: 

EndNote Desktop software is now available to Staff and Students of the University of Manchester to download from the University’s Electronic Software Delivery System (ESD). This software is not only for installation on university owned machines but also extends to personally owned devices of staff and students for free.

You can:

  1. Download the software for your University owned machine via: Software Center [sic].
  2. Download the software for a personally owned device via Electronic Software Delivery System (ESD). (Global Protect VPN required)
     

Installing on a University managed computer:

 

Installing on a personal computer:

On campus - (attached to UoM or eduroam wifi):
Off Campus - (NOT attached to UoM or eduroam wifi):
  • Note: It is essential that you install and are connected to the GlobalProtect VPN

 

You may need to Mount the software first before installing (see also *How to mount your downloaded software.)

 

Global Protect

To install GlobalProtect

  1. Go to the web address:
    1. Go to https://vpnconnect-standard.manchester.ac.uk (for Undergraduates and Postgraduate taught)
    2. Go to https://vpnconnect.manchester.ac.uk (for Staff and Postgraduate Researchers)
  2. In the login screen, enter your University username and password select Login and accept the Duo notification on your smartphone (or if using a code enter University username and password, code) and click Login.
  3. On the next screen, select the appropriate operating system for your computer and determine which Windows system you are using i.e. Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit or Mac 32/64 bit.
  4. When prompted, download and run the installer file. Accept the default settings click Continue or Next until Finish.
  5. To complete the installation process, restart your computer.

Signing in to Global Protect

1. Launch GlobalProtect.

Windows: Select the small arrow in the system tray in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen and then select the GlobalProtect globe icon.

MacOS: Select the GlobalProtect globe icon in the top menu bar on the right-hand side.

2. A Welcome to GlobalProtect window will open:

  • Enter the Portal address vpnconnect-standard.manchester.ac.uk (for Undergraduates and Postgraduate taught) 
  • Enter the Portal address vpnconnect.manchester.ac.uk (for Staff and Postgraduate Researchers)

3. Enter your University username and password click Connect and accept the Duo notification on your smartphone or if using a code enter University username and password, code and click Connect.

Mounting your EndNote ISO for Windows

In order to correctly install the EndNote software, the downloaded image (ISO file) needs to be ‘mounted’ on your windows machine, this enables your computer to access the embedded University of Manchester product key. Once mounted correctly you can install the programme automatically.

N.B. Close all existing Office programmes before installation.

Mounting your EndNote ISO for Macintosh:

In order to correctly install the EndNote software, the downloaded image (DMG file) needs to be ‘mounted’ on your macOS machine, this enables your computer to access the embedded University of Manchester product key. Once mounted correctly you can install the programme automatically.
