How do I merge two or more documents with EndNote citations into one?

In order to merge two documents that include EndNote references into one complete doc you can follow this procedure.

The trick is to turn off EndNote formatting while you copy and paste:

  1. Open your EndNote library and keep it open.
  2. Open the first document that you wish to combine.
  3. Within the EndNote tab, click on the drop-down Convert Citations and Bibliography button to select Convert to Unformatted Citations.

The EndNote citations in your text will now appear in curly brackets. Example: {Anderton, 2017 #69}

  1. Repeat these steps with all the documents that you wish to combine.
  2. You can now copy and paste the text from the unformatted documents into a new single Word document.
  3. When all documents have been combined, click on the Update Citations and Bibliography button to reapply the citation style of your choice. All your citations and reference list will now be formatted as one contiguous document
