I have an error message in SDC Platinum: invalid user initials

Please note: Due to the ongoing cyber incident, we are currently unable to provide access to SDC Platinum off campus. This has been escalated to the Library Cyber Incident Response group as a priority. As of 6 July, we can offer on-campus access if you manually configure SDC, see notices on the walls. We apologise for the inconvenience.

When you launch SDC Platinum and click the ‘Login’ button, you are prompted to enter user initials. When we first subscribed to SDC, we set up a user account called ‘Eddie Davies Library’, with the user initials ‘EDL’. You must type these initials when logging in.

Sometimes the user account becomes corrupt. This is due to a problem with the packaging of the software for our IT setup. In this case, you will see the warning message: ‘Invalid user initials.’ Thankfully, you can add the user account again.

SDC Platinum user initials error

Follow the steps below to add the user account again.

Launch SDC Tools

The user accounts are managed in a separate application called SDC Tools.

  1. Accept the user initials error message.
  2. Close SDC Platinum.
  3. Click on the Start menu and search for ‘SDC Tools’. Double-click it.

Add a user

Add a user

The ‘Eddie Davies Library’ user account has likely become corrupted. Ignore it, and add it again:

  1. On the icon menu, click the ‘Users’ icon.
  2. The ‘Select a user’ window appears. Click on the ‘Add button’.
  3. The new ‘User information’ window appears. Complete the required fields (listed below) then click the ‘OK’ button, then the ‘Close button’.

The required fields are:

  • Initials’: EDL
  • First Name’: Eddie
  • Last Name’: Davies
  • Email’: uml.bds@manchester.ac.uk

Check the account details

It is possible that the Manchester account details have also been lost or corrupted. To add these back:

  1. On the icon menu, click the ‘Account’ icon.
  2. The ‘Account’ window appears with two tabs. Complete all the fields, see the printed notices in the Finance Zone.
  3. Click the ‘OK’ button, then the ‘Close button’.

We have not provided the values of the Login ID or Password here for security reasons. Please see the notices on the walls in the Finance Zone.

Launch SDC Platinum again

Launch SDC Platinum again
