I'm a member of staff at another university, how do I access to the library?

SCONUL

Staff from institutions in the SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) Access scheme may apply to use The University of Manchester Library and borrow books (except full time undergraduates).

All staff and students within the SCONUL Access Scheme may access any of The University of Manchester Library sites with the exception of the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons and the Eddie Davies Library. All users of the Stopford Library will need to show SCONUL membership details and ID at reception to gain access to the building and the Library.

In order to do so you must first apply to SCONUL via the website then bring, in person, a copy of your SCONUL Access approval email (this can be printed or simply shown to a staff member on your personal device) and your university ID card to the Customer Services Desk in the Main Library. You will be asked to complete an application form for membership of The University of Manchester Library.

Your membership card will them be produced for you while you wait, usually within 10-15 minutes.
PLEASE NOTE: Cards can only be produced Monday to Friday until 7pm and until 4pm at the weekend.

You cannot use the Document Supply service but do have access to some electronic resources via our external user PCs.

Due to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, some institutions have decided not to take part in the SCONUL scheme at this time. You will be able to see a full list of participating institutions when you apply for membership.

Please double check you will be able to access your chosen library before travelling, as there may be sudden changes to their access regulations

Use our Library Help service if you require further information.

International universities
You can apply at the Main Library Customer Service Desk for reference access to the Library for up to two months on production of a valid university ID card. If you require access for longer than this period you must also provide an official letter from your home institution supporting your application.

Vacation access

Staff from other universities can access the Main Library during our vacation periods.

You will need to bring your university ID/library card as proof of your status and apply at the Main Library Customer Services Desk.

A temporary pass will be issued allowing you access during this period.

If you lose the pass, you will need to inform staff at the Main Library Customer Services Desk or via Library Help.

Opening hours vary, check our locations and opening hours for the library you wish to visit.
