Why does 'Locate This Book' highlight a large area of shelves on the map for the book I am looking for?


A book’s location is identified in 'Locate This Book' using the book’s shelfmark, which you can view on Library Search

The library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme to arrange books on the shelves. As the Dewey scheme runs from 000-999 (including to many decimal places), 'Locate This Book' uses smaller groupings of the Dewey scheme (820s, 540s, 109s etc) and displays the location of all shelves within this group. 

For some groups, this will only cover one row of shelves in the library:

However, for some groups, this may cover up to 5 rows of shelves, depending on the number of books held by the library in a particular subject area. For example, nursing books are located within the 610s group, which cover several rows of shelving on the 'Locate This Book' map:

Follow the guidance on finding a book on the Library shelves to find the exact location of your book on the shelves within this area.
