I'm a student at another university, how do I access the library?

SCONUL

Research postgraduates, full time taught postgraduates, part-time, distance learning and placement students at institutions in the SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) Access scheme may apply to use The University of Manchester Library and borrow books (undergraduates are also eligible but only for reference access).

In order to do so you must first apply to SCONUL then bring, in person, a copy of your SCONUL Access approval email (this can be printed or simply shown to a staff member on your personal device) and your university ID card to the Library Experience Desk in the Main Library. You will be asked to complete a membership form for The University of Manchester Library.

Your membership card will them be produced for you while you wait, usually within 10-15 minutes.

Memberships can be processed at the following times:

  • Monday- Friday 8am-7:45pm
  • Saturday- Sunday 9am-4:45pm

SCONUL users who are entitled to borrow books, can loan four books for the academic year (High Demand books are excluded). If you apply with a Band R- your membership is for reference of our collection only.

You can also browse a selection of our e-resources collection on our External Users PC. Please speak to a member of the Library Experience Team at the front desk who will set up the computer for you. The External Users PC can be used during the following hours:

  • Monday- Friday 8am-8pm
  • Saturday- Sunday 9am-5pm

Please make use of our Library Help service if you require further information.

Courses with special arrangements

The Library supports various categories of users who are not direct students of the University but may be studying or working in areas associated with it and may need to make use of the Library's resources.

As arrangements vary for each group, please contact the Library via Library Help.
