Collaboration

Answer

What is collaboration?

In the context of open research, collaboration broadly describes the participation, contribution and co-production of individuals and groups working alongside core research staff on scholarly research. This could include industry partners; patients; members of the public; and community groups. This approach encompasses several practices including team science; open collaboration; citizen science; co-production; and public and patient participation and engagement (PPIE).

Benefits of collaboration

  • Increases participation and engagement in research, facilitating research on a larger scale

  • Helps to align research more closely with societal needs, maximising research impact

  • Projects provide reliable and up-to-date scientific and scholarly information to the public, policymakers and other stakeholders

  • Leverages the combined expertise of all contributors to enhance the value of research projects and outcomes

  • Facilitates and advances scientific and scholarly innovation through combining resources like effort, time and research infrastructure

  • Open collaboration can increase discoverability and access to research outputs and findings by increasing engagement during the process
