Funding for Open Access monographs: UKRI
Answer
UKRI Open Access requirements for monographs
UKRI-funded authors publishing long-form outputs eg monographs, book chapters and edited collections, are required to comply with the UKRI Open Access policy.
This policy applies to long-form outputs published from January 1st 2024.
UKRI funding for Open Access monographs
UKRI provides funding to support compliance with this policy. Authors can request funding via their institution for contributions towards the payment of Open Access fees. University of Manchester authors should submit an application for funding to the Office for Open Research via this request form.
To complete the form, you will need:
-
Grant code(s) for your UKRI funding
-
An estimate for the cost of publishing your long-form output Open Access
UKRI’s support for Book Processing Charges (BPCs) is capped at £10,000 (inclusive of VAT), and support for chapters will be capped at £1,000. If your publisher’s quotation for Open Access fees exceeds these amounts, you can still submit a funding request. The Office for Open Research will respond to you to discuss your options.
Once you have submitted the form, the Office for Open Research will submit your request to UKRI. The funder aims to respond to initial applications (referred to as ‘stage 1 applications’) within ten days. Please do not notify publishers that you will be able to pay a BPC/Open Access fee until your funding request has been approved, or you may be liable to cover costs if the funder is unable to fulfil your request.
UKRI provides guidance on applying to the Open Access monograph fund, including permissible costs, via the funder’s website.
Unfunded monographs
Unfunded authors may be able to access funds to cover Open Access fees for monographs via the Office for Open Research’s annual Open Access Monograph Competition.
