Green Open Access for monographs 

Open Access to monographs is typically facilitated by the payment of a book processing charge (BPC) [Link to OA Monographs KB article]. However, some publishers will allow authors to share an earlier version of their book or book chapter via a repository, subject to an embargo period. For example, Cambridge University Press allows authors to share up to one chapter of a monograph with a six month embargo. 

Jisc has created a tool for authors to understand publisher self-archiving policies for books and book chapters, which can inform options for Green Open Access. If your chosen publisher is not listed on Jisc’s tool, please contact the Office for Open Research so we can explore and discuss your options.  

Open Access for funded monographs 

If your work acknowledges funding from UKRI or The Wellcome Trust, you need to share your long-form outputs Open Access. Green Open Access may not be appropriate for funded monographs, as publisher self-archiving policies may not be compliant with funder requirements.
