Page charges and non-Open Access publication fees

Answer

The Office for Open Research manages several budgets to support the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs). These budgets can only be used to pay fees relating to Open Access. It is not possible to cover non-Open Access publication fees from these budgets. Non-Open Access publication fees could include:

  • Page charges

  • Publication charges

  • Colour charges

While some research funders may allow the use of project grants to pay these kinds of fees, some, including UKRI, prohibit the use of their funds to pay non-Open Access publication fees. UKRI’s guidance advises:

“Research publication costs for research articles cannot be included in research grants. If an author or research organisation considers such a charge to be appropriate, they will need to use alternative sources of funding.”
