Open Access funds: NIHR

Answer

The Library does not manage any NIHR Open Access (OA) funds, and cannot support the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs) for outputs in-scope of NIHR’s Open Access policy.

NIHR will pay reasonable fees required by a publisher to effect publication in line with the criteria of the NIHR OA policy. NIHR-funded authors should liaise directly with NIHR for support with OA costs.  You can apply for NIHR OA funding using the request form available on their website.

The NIHR OA policy applies to all peer-reviewed research articles, including reviews not commissioned by publishers and conference papers, submitted for publication on or after 1 June 2022 arising from:

  • For NIHR Infrastructure (including NIHR research units and schools): research studies where the majority of the research costs are funded by the NIHR. For these awards, OA costs should continue to be budgeted by applicants at application stage.

If your NIHR-funded paper is not in scope of NIHR’s Open Access policy, you may be eligible for Open Access funding provided by the Library for unfunded research articles
