Research publishing: article types

Answer

Depending on the content of your manuscript, a publisher will apply an article type to your submission. This article type indicates the format the journal article will take.

Article types vary by publisher. Examples include; primary research, review, report, commentary. Journals will usually provide detailed guidance about the different article types they use. E.g. Elsevier's guide, or the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition's author instructions page.

If you wish to access one of our publisher agreements to publish your paper Open Access (OA), it is important to check the article type of your publication. Most agreements specify that only original research or review article types are eligible for OA publication via the agreement, however, this can differ between publishers.
