Create a bibliography after each chapter in EndNote

You may wish to display a reference list at the end of each chapter of a manuscript in Word, but not at the end of the manuscript.

From the EndNote Library: modify the style

  1. Go to 'Tools' > 'Output Styles' > 'Open Style Manager...' and choose the style you are using. For example, APA 6th.
  2. Select 'Edit' and then click 'Sections' from the left-hand panel when the style window opens. This allows you to create multiple reference lists for a single Word document.
  3. Select 'Create a bibliography for each section'.
  4. Save the style as a modified version of  APA 6th, such as APA 6th Bibliography.

In order to edit a style, you need to change EndNote's default folder locations: To change folder locations (https://manchester-uk.libanswers.com/teaching-and-learning/faq/185875)

On the Word document: insert a section break to each chapter and apply the modified style

For Mac Users (Word 365):

  1. Separate each chapter by going to 'Layout' > 'Breaks' > 'Next Page' under 'Section Breaks'.
  2. Go to 'EndNote' tab  > 'Configure Bibliography' making sure the style is set to the one you just modified, such as APA 6th Bibliography.
  3. Your Word document will automatically update the references and display them after each chapter.

For PC Users (Word 365):

  1. Separate each chapter by going to 'Layout' > 'Breaks' > 'Next Page' under 'Section Breaks'.
  2. Click the 'EndNote' tab in Word.
  3. Click the 'arrow' at the right corner of Bibliography.
  4. Configure Bibliography window opens, make sure the style is set to the one you just modified, such as APA 6th Bibliography.
  5. Your Word document will automatically update the references and display them after each chapter.

You may just need to check that your chosen style output is configured for creating a bibliography after each section.
